Modern Day Issues
After the missile sites were removed from Cuba and America agreed not to invade, the Soviet Union continued to aid Cuba for some 30 years. The Soviet Union had aided Cuba until 1991, when the Soviet Union broke apart. Cuba's economy has since then plummeted. Today, there is still a trade embargo between the US and Cuba. The US stubbornly refuses to lift it due to hatred for Castro and communism. American citizens are not legally allowed to visit Cuba, and vice-versa. Fidel Castro is still dictator of Cuba and still communist. He refuses to give up power, although he is growing very old. He has backed several communist revolutions in Latin America and Africa. Cuba is one of the five remaining communist countries in the world today.
